St. Xavier's Institute of Education, Mumbai (SXIE, hereafter) was established fifty years ago, in June 1953, as a Christian college by the Jesuit Mumbai Province of the Society of Jesus with Fr. Angel Sologran as the founder Principal. It was granted permanent affiliation to the then University of Bombay in 1957 vide the Government of Maharashtra notification No. 1257 dated 12th July 1957, and the University of Bombay letter No.27199 of 1957 dated 26th July 1957 and sanctioned an intake of 50 students only. SXIE is one of the oldest, aided religious minorities, grant-in-aid institutions of Mumbai. It celebrated its fifty years of service to the people of Mumbai and Maharashtra last year. SXIE stands for academic excellence and promotes character formation based on the ideals of love of God and service of human beings. The SXIE was approved by the University Grants Commission under Section 12(f) of the UGC Act for receiving financial assistance as certified by the University of Bombay vide their letter no. CDC/9860 of 1983 dated 5th October 1983.The National Council for Teacher Education gave provisional recognition in 1999 to SXIE B.Ed programme for session programme 1999-2000 vide their letter No.WRC/9-9/99/3120 dt: 20/5/99 and later on permanent recognition in 2000 vide letter No. WRC/5-6/2K/10926 dated 12/12/2000 for an intake of 100. At present, the SXIE also offers a one - year programme of ECCE and admits 50 students to this programme. SXIE was approved by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act for receiving financial assistances as certified by University of Bombay vide their letter No.CDC/9860 of 1983 dated 5th October 1983. Located in the heart of commercial area of south Mumbai, it functions from a five - storey building, mainly from the 3rd and the 4th floors and partly from the ground and the mezzanine floors.
